What would a trip to Hawaii be without a hike. Home to trails like the treacherous yet Instagrammable Stairway to Heaven, Kaau Crater Hike, Diamond Head and more, it’s one of my favorite things to do while visiting the island.
Since we were only there for a weekend we decided to hit two trails — one of them being the Pillbox Hike. This hike is without a doubt one of the most touristy hikes on the island. It’s pretty easy to get to. So easy that once you’re in the general vicinity you’ll see people in hiking gear heading up to the trailhead. This wasn’t my first time hiking this trail, but the views and pillbox lookouts (old military bunkers) are what keep me coming back. I’d wear hiking shoes if I were you since there is a ton of loose dirt on the way up to each of the two pillboxes. If you don’t wear them you’ll be fine (as you can see, I didn’t), they’ve now tied ropes around the trees to help you get up safely. The trail is about average as far as difficulty goes, but when you add the Hawaiian sun into the mix it can get a little difficult. Each pillbox offers great views. The trail continues after the second pillbox but there’s nothing really different to see over there. It’s just the start/end of the other trailhead (which I’ve done and do not recommend. lol). I recommend starting the trail from the map below. It’s easier and safer to get to the pillboxes this way. This was the first time we did the trail and headed down to the beach from the view after – Lanikai Beach. Lanikai beach is beautiful and perfect, just a bit crowded because of it being a popular tourist destination and all. Next time you’re in the Aloha state assemble your crew and head up to this must-do trail.
