This year’s ComplexCon was extra special for one very good reason, N.E.R.D. From blasting N.E.R.D. in the high school parking lot to leaving school early to go to autograph signings in VA Beach ya girl is a bit of an N.E.R.D/Pharrell stan. When I heard that they were going to be headlining the event this year it was a wrap. To be quite honest, it was already a wrap when they announced the second annual event. N.E.R.D. was simply the icing on the cake.
I attended last year ‘s inaugural event and it was without a doubt one of the most fun experiences I’ve ever had. This year I went into the convention thinking it would be more of the same, but for better or worse it definitely wasn’t. Were there a bunch of cool brands with cool exclusive things? Yes. Did I get to meet friends from the internet IRL? Yes. Was attending the N.E.R.D. listening party amazing? Yes and no. I had no idea that they’d be headlining ComplexCon with a listening party so it was a bit disappointing when they only performed Lemon. It was still a special experience I was grateful to be a part of nonetheless. Although for all the good, there seemed to be just as much bad. Seeing grown men fight over shoes, for spots in lines, and having security shut things down was extremely disheartening and annoying. People were even paying off security guards to let them cut in line. It was just insanity. ComplexCon 2017 was one big parallel to the state of the “culture” today. The bubble has gotten so big and the energy just isn’t the same anymore.
Despite the setbacks I still plan on attending next year. The friends I went with really helped make the weekend worthwhile, so shout out to them. I hope that Complex listens to the people and fixes some of the fundamental issues that were present. It’s such a dope event it would be a shame to not get it right next year.
